Comics Events in Los Angeles: Week of 11/7/10

You don’t have to sit at home alone reading to get into comic books and graphic novels. There are always great events going on that celebrate the vitality and creativity of comics. Just here in Los Angeles, there are more events I can ever make. But I try, and so should you. You never know what you’ll discover.

Here are some local Los Angeles events coming up that celebrate the sequential art form.

This week:

Sunday, November 7, 3 PM: Stan Lee (co-creator/writer of Spider-Man, Iron Man, Thor, Fantastic Four) signs Marvel ArtWorks products at Every Picture Tells A Story Gallery, 1333 Montana Ave., Santa Monica 90403. Tickets: $0 (but Stan Lee is only signing Marvel ArtWorks products, so purchase may be necessary).

Sunday, November 7, 5 PM: Stan Lee introduces the documentary With Great Power: The Stan Lee Story followed by a discussion with filmmakers Terry Dougas, Nikki Frakes and Will Hess, at the Aero Theater, 1328 Montana Ave., Santa Monica 90403 (across the street from the Every Picture Gallery event). Tickets: $11.

Wednesaday, November 10, 7 PM: Jim McCann (writer, New Avengers, ABC-TV’s One Life to Live) signs his new release Return of the Dapper Men at Meltdown Comics, 7522 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles 90046.

Wednesday, November 10, 8 PM: Tim Sale (artist, Batman: The Long Halloween, NBC-TV’s Heroes) and Bagged & Boarded‘s Matt Cohen and Jesse Rivers in person for a night of geek speak, comics & coolness to raise money for The Hero Initiative at SModcastle, 6468 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles 90038. Tickets: $10.

Wednesday, November 10, 8:30 PM: The Meltdown (weekly comedy show) with stand-up comics Chelsea Perretti, Rob Delaney, Steve Agee, Seth Morris and Nick Kroll, at Meltdown Comics, 7522 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles 90046. Tickets: $8.

Thursday, November 11, 6 PM: Jimmy Urine (aka Jimmy Euringer) and Steve, Righ? (aka Steve Montano) of synthpunk band Mindless Self Indulgence sign their new comic Adventures Into Mindless Self Indulgence and new CD by The Left Rights Bad Choices Made Easy at Meltdown Comics, 7522 Sunset Blvd., Los Angeles 90046. Friday, November 12, 6 PM: Tim Sale appears for a membership party to again benefit The Hero Initiative at Golden Apple, 7018 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles 90038. Tickets: $0 / $25 VIP Package includes limited edition print and sketches.

Saturday, November 13, 7 PM: Sanjay Patel (writer/illustrator Ramayana: Divine Loophole) presents an opening reception for his first solo exhibition, running November 13-29, at Gallery Nucleus, 210 East Main Street, Alhambra 91801. Tickets: $0.

Saturday, November 20, 11 AM: Mark Waid (writer Kingdom Come, Captain America: Man Out of Time) signing for Free Comic Book Day II anniversary sale at Geoffrey’s Comics, 15900 Crenshaw Blvd., Suite B, Gardena 90250. Tickets: $0.

Saturday, November 20, 7 PM: Brian Chippendale and C.F. appear for slideshows and book signings in support of their new respective books If ‘n Off and Powr Mastrs 3 at Family, 436 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles 90036. Tickets: $0.

Saturday & Sunday, December 11 & 12, 10 AM – 6 PM: Scott McCloud (writer/artist Understanding ComicsMaking Comics) presents a 2-day hands-on workshop and visual workshop on the art of making comics at the Los Angeles Academy of Figurative Art, 16926 Saticoy Street, Van Nuys 91406. Admission: $450.

Sunday, December 12, 10 AM: Los Angeles Comic Book and Science Fiction Convention at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Center, 700 West 32nd Street, Los Angeles. Tickets: $8 / $0 for kids 5 and under.
